Welcome Home Sam

Tani and I have decided to combine our passion for cool cars and cold coffee.

Big Dad’s Moto is expanding into a coffee truck business so we can sell premium cold brew coffee at local car shows and public events in the Atlanta area.

The search began a few months ago for the perfect coffee vehicle.

The new vehicle had a few requirements:

  • Reliable

  • No major work required to be road worthy

  • Fit in and stand out at any type of car show

  • Big enough to carry large quantities of cold brew coffee

After looking at many different models of vans and wagons from the 60’s and 70s, along with several VW buses, we found the perfect ride to represent Big Dad’s Moto.

This is our 1993 Subaru Sambar

These Japanese Domestic Market (JDM) vehicles are often referred to as Kei Cars due to their small overall size and even smaller engine.

This little AWD van comes with a supercharged 660cc engine putting out just over 55 horsepower. By far the slowest vehicle at the Keller house.

What makes this Sambar unique is the custom body kit only available in Japan that makes it look similar to a classic VW bus.

As luck would have it, we found the van at a dealership that specializes in right-hand drive vehicles just a few miles away from our daughter’s college in Cleveland, TN. After looking over the available Sambars on their lot and then lots of back and forth texts with the owner the following week, we agreed on a price and a date we could pick up the van we wanted.

Because of the small engine, the Sambar doesn’t like going more than 50-60mph. This meant we couldn’t use the freeway for our 125 mile drive home. Taking the backroads the entire way meant our drive home took close to 4 hours! Once again, this little Sambar drew a ton of smiles, waves and pictures during the drive.

Now that “Sam” the Sambar is home, it is time to start the conversion to make it a coffee truck.

This is going to be fun…
